Apr 08, 2023

On Thursday, the UAE Central Bank announced the issuance of new Dh1,000 banknotes which will be made available at banks and exchange houses from the following Monday. The new banknotes are made of eco-friendly polymer material and were first introduced in December 2022 in celebration of the Emirates’ 51st National Day.

According to a statement from the Central Bank, the banknote features images, and cultural and development symbols that showcase the global achievements of the UAE, highlighting the country's position among developed nations that it has attained in record time. The design also embodies the forward-looking vision and ambitions of the UAE as a leader in space exploration.

The new banknote is aligned with the UAE leadership’s declaration of 2023 as the year of sustainability, reflecting the country's ambitious future and developmental journey. Khaled Mohamed Balama, Governor of the UAE Central Bank, noted that the new banknote features unique technical characteristics that are in line with global standards and technologies, with the aim of making the dirham an international currency used worldwide.

The front of the banknote features a portrait of the UAE’s Founding Father, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, alongside an image of a space shuttle, which reflects the country's space ambitions. The Central Bank explained that this ambition is reflected in the design of the banknote, which depicts the "Emirates Mission to Explore Mars - the Hope Probe" at the top of the space shuttle. The image of an astronaut has also been added as a security mark on the front side of the banknote to symbolize the first Emirati astronaut's achievement in space.

The back of the banknote features an image of the Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant in Abu Dhabi, which will play a key role in diversifying energy sources in the country and reducing carbon emissions. The Central Bank has also added prominent symbols in Braille to help blind and visually impaired consumers identify the banknote's value.

The new banknotes will be in circulation alongside the current Dh1,000 note, whose value is guaranteed by UAE law.
